8 course - “Understanding the basic elements of photography”
Certificate of completion
Course 1 - Essentials
This course will teach you how to photograph like a pro; however, there are some
things with which you need to prepare yourself in order to be successful. Just
as you wouldn’t jump on the freeway without first learning a little bit about
your car, you can’t expect to learn the complexities of photography without first
knowing a little bit about your camera.
Course 2 - ISO
ISO stands for The International Organization for Standardization (Organization
international de normalization). ISO ratings are measurements determining how
sensitive an image sensor is to light. Determining the correct ISO not only is
necessary in properly capturing an image, it is the first camera setting that you
will use when taking a picture.
Course 3 - Aperture
The aperture is an adjustable circular opening (diaphragm) that controls the
amount of light coming through the lens. You can control how large or small
the opening (diaphragm) becomes. The main function of aperture is to gather,
light and to control the amount of light coming in through the lens.
Course 4 - Shutter Speed
The camera‘s shutter controls light by both blocking and allowing light to strike
the image sensor. When you push the button on the camera to take a picture,
the shutter opens and closes for a set amount of time to let light strike the
camera’s image sensor.
Course 5 - Relationship
The combination of aperture and shutter speed is where the magic starts to
happen. The ISO determines the amount of light that the camera’s image sensor needs for correct exposures. The Combination of aperture and shutter speed
determines how much light will reach the camera’s image sensor.
Course 6 - Metering
Exposure refers to the total amount of light allowed to strike the image sensor.
With too much light we overexpose and too little light we underexpose.
High quality images are achieved when the correct amount of light strikes the
image sensor.
Course 7 - Lighting & Composition
Light is the single most important element of a photograph. As photographers,
we create each and every one of our images with light. When we photograph a
subject or a scene, we rely on our eyes to find the light that gives us the artistic
effect that we are trying to accomplish. Composition is what separates the pros from the beginners; it allows you to take control in the organization of an image.
Course 8 - Completion
Now that you have an understanding of the basic elements of photography,
it’s time to put it all together. Not only do you know how to find all of the
settings on your camera, you now know what these settings will do for the outcome
of your images. By putting this knowledge together and by practicing as often as you can, you will be able to take your photography to the next level.
